When a customer is imported into a Shopify store, their order history and customer information (name, email, address) are transferred. However, a customer account is not automatically created by Shopify β this is by design.
Key points:
To view their previous order history on the storefront, customers must create an account via the front end of the site, or be invited by the merchant from the admin.
Until an account is created, customer order history is visible only in the Shopify Admin Dashboard β merchants always have full access.
Once a customer creates an account using the same email address that was migrated, Shopify automatically links their previous orders to the new account.
What if a customer doesn't show up in admin search?
In rare cases, Shopify's admin search index can become temporarily out of sync after a large migration. The customer data and orders are in the system, but the search may not display them right away.
If this happens:
Try searching for the customer's email in the Orders section β you'll likely find them there.
Contact Shopify Support and ask them to reindex your customer data. This typically resolves within 48 hours.
Reach out to our team β we can help coordinate with Shopify directly.
This is a known Shopify platform behavior and is not related to the migration itself.
