What Do Shopify Order Statuses Mean?

Learn what each order status means, from payment to fulfillment, so you can manage your orders confidently after migration.

After migrating to Shopify, you'll notice that orders have multiple status types. Here's a breakdown of each one.

Order Status

Shows the overall state of the order:

  • Open - the order is active and being processed

  • Archived - the order has been closed/completed

  • Cancelled - the order was cancelled

Payment Status

  • Pending - payment has been initiated but not yet confirmed

  • Authorized - payment has been authorized but not yet captured

  • Partially paid - only part of the total has been paid

  • Paid - payment has been received in full

  • Partially refunded - a partial refund has been issued

  • Refunded - the full amount has been refunded

  • Voided - the payment was cancelled before capture

  • Expired - the payment authorization expired before it was captured

Fulfillment Status

Shows the state of order fulfillment:

  • Unfulfilled - no items have been shipped yet

  • In progress - some items have been fulfilled, or a fulfillment request has been sent

  • Partially fulfilled - some items have been shipped, others have not

  • On hold - fulfillment is temporarily paused

  • Scheduled - fulfillment is scheduled for a later date

  • Fulfilled - all items have been shipped

  • Pending fulfillment - a fulfillment request is awaiting a response

Return Status

Only appears when a customer initiates a return:

  • Return in progress - the return has been requested and is being processed

  • Returned - the return has been completed
